Practice Proper Oral Hygiene
Almost everyone brushes their teeth, but sometimes folks don’t brush their teeth or floss thoroughly enough to prevent tooth decay and gum (periodontal) disease. It is important to remember to floss at least once a day, every day. You should also brush your teeth, gums, and tongue twice a day for a minimum of two minutes each time. If you don’t floss or brush properly, plaque buildup (and ultimately tartar) will coat the teeth and gums. Plaque and tartar irritate the gums and contribute to dental caries.
Drink Water Throughout the Day
You are probably aware of the importance of drinking enough water. Not only does water help keep your body hydrated, but it is good for your oral health, too. Instead of drinking your daily intake of water in large quantities, we recommend drinking water throughout the day. This will help you maintain a healthy pH level in your mouth, as well as help dilute acid and rinse away leftover food.
Avoid Chewing on Inedible Objects and Grinding Your Teeth
Many people bite down on their nails or pen caps during times of anxiety, stress, or anger. Other folks may grind and clench their teeth as a way to cope with life’s pressures. Unfortunately, chewing on anything other than food and grinding one’s teeth can permanently damage teeth by breaking down the protective coating of teeth (tooth enamel).
